Something occurred to me the other day: I hate eating out of strange plastic containers.
It's often my excuse to justify getting take out at lunch, rather than eating something I brought from home. My once-delicious-looking chicken just looks unappetizing rattling around in a plastic snapware container.
I noticed a coworker eating an amazing looking salad. It was nothing special. No taco shell, no fancy toppings, not even a crouton. But I coveted it from across the room. Finally I realized the reason: it was on a plate.
Simple right? I was loving that salad because it looked like actual people food. She looked like a normal person eating. There was no scraping the sides of a semi-disposable container.
Although I have yet to venture into the actual ceramic plate, I have started plating my food at lunch. Like the Top Chef judges always say "You eat with your eyes first." Boy are they right. Even though the food is the same, it looks like actual food. My brain says "ooh, lunch!" instead of "ugh, leftovers." Small fix, big difference. And yes - it works for frozen lunches too!
(sorry for the quality of the picture - I had to take it with my non-iphone cell phone)

This is an excellent tip. I am always encouraging people to make healthy lunches and bring them to work, but what you've said here makes a lot of sense. We need to not only eat healthier food, but take care to make it look appealing, even if it's as simple as putting it on a styrofoam plate. Thanks for mentioning this.
Yes it does make seem like something special when you eat from a plate using real eating utensils instead of plastic forks. And drink your sparkiling water from a champagne glass. Now that's real special.
yeah, i like mine to look like people food, too. boss actually bought plates and bowls for the office. nice:)
